Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael A. Garrett — affectionately known as “Military Mike.”
Hi Michael, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Michael A. Garrett is a retired United States Army Veteran who resides in Houston, Texas, and has dedicated his life to service beyond the battlefield. He is the esteemed founder of the nonprofit organization Men of Honor Veterans Transitional Facility, through which he has guided and supported countless former service members as they transition from active duty to civilian life.
Michael attributes his vision of service to divine inspiration, declaring that his mission to uplift others was “sent to him from God” — a calling he continues to embrace with humility and determination.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Through Men of Honor Veterans Transitional Facility, Michael has walked alongside countless former service members facing one of life’s toughest transitions: from active duty to civilian life. He knows firsthand that the battlefield doesn’t end when the uniform comes off — and he has made it his mission to ensure no veteran walks that road alone.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Michael stands as a pillar of his community. He serves faithfully as a Director on MUD Board 304 Water District and as President of his Homeowners Association, ensuring the well-being and progress of his neighbors.
Since joining Social Good in Action, Inc. in 2020, founded by CEO Martesha C. Lagard, Michael has devoted his time and energy to community outreach — unloading monthly donations, preparing food bags and care packages for the homeless, and providing supplies to families in hardship.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to veterans and communities across Houston and the United States, he was awarded the 2022 Presidential Award for Service — a testament to his unwavering commitment to those in need.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
His joyful spirit has brought delight to children during the annual SGIA Christmas Surprise Home Visits & Holiday Experience, where he embodied the character of the “Grinch” — spreading cheer and laughter while also rallying donations to sustain the mission of Social Good in Action, Inc.!
What does legacy mean to you, and what do you want the world to remember about your impact?
“Legacy means the mission continues long after I’m gone. I want the world to remember that a soldier never truly stops serving — the uniform just changes. If one veteran finds their way home because of Men of Honor, if one child smiles a little brighter because the Grinch showed up, if one neighbor sleeps easier knowing someone cares — then my service meant something. God sent me this mission, and I intend to carry it out until He calls me home.”
How has your work created impact beyond your community — across the country or around the world?
From guiding veterans through Men of Honor, to serving on the MUD Board and leading his HOA, to his hands-on outreach with SGIA since 2020 — Michael’s impact spans Houston and reaches veterans and communities across the United States.
